The Spamhaus Policy Block List (PBL) is a policy-based blocklist designed to prevent IP addresses that should not be sending unauthenticated email from doing so. These IPs are often included to reduce the risk of spam or malicious email activity originating from ranges that are not designated for direct email transmission. It is not a blacklist.

Why Does Netrouting Use Spamhaus PBL?

At Netrouting, as a hosting provider, we utilize the Spamhaus PBL to ensure that unauthenticated emails from our network are blocked. This prevents potential spam abuse from occurring on our platform and ensures the integrity of our services for legitimate users.

We use the PBL for the following reasons:

  1. Spam Prevention: It helps block unauthenticated emails that could lead to spam or malicious activity, protecting our network’s reputation and ensuring clean email traffic.
  2. Improved Deliverability: By preventing unauthorized IPs from sending emails, we improve the chances of emails sent from authenticated sources being delivered successfully.
  3. Network Integrity: The PBL ensures that only IP addresses configured for authenticated email sending (via SMTP) are able to send emails, maintaining network quality.

It’s important to note that the PBL only affects unauthenticated emails. If you are sending email via SMTP with proper authentication, your emails will not be blocked by the Spamhaus PBL.

How to Get Your IP Address Whitelisted from Spamhaus PBL

If you believe your IP has been mistakenly listed on the PBL or needs to be removed, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Check Your IP: Go to the Spamhaus Blocklist Lookup and enter your IP to see if it is listed on the PBL.
  2. Review the Listing: If your IP is listed, it is typically because it was flagged as an IP range not designated for sending unauthenticated emails. This might occur for hosting IPs not properly configured for direct email delivery.
  3. Request Whitelisting:
    • Follow the instructions provided on the Spamhaus website to request removal from the PBL. You may need to provide additional details regarding the use of the IP address and ensure it’s correctly set up for sending authenticated emails.
    • Ensure that your email services are properly authenticated via SMTP, as the PBL primarily blocks unauthenticated email traffic.
  4. Contact Netrouting Support: If you need further assistance, contact the Netrouting support team. We can help investigate the issue and guide you through the process of whitelisting your IP.
