Dedicated Servers Oct 22, 2020

When it comes to choosing a hosting solution, you may feel a little overwhelmed on how to choose the best service for your business needs. Especially if you’re not familiar with the differences between them. For this guide, we are going to discuss two options for hosting plans, VPS Hosting and Dedicated Servers.

VPS Hosting

Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting is a virtual server, one of several which are created on a single physical server. Clients get a share of a physical server for several hardware resources they have paid for, and multiple clients often share one physical host machine. Generally, VPS hosting is suited to small business websites or large personal sites that need decent resource limits. The reason that VPS hosting works well is because it is flexible in handling surges of traffic and is not too expensive.

Dedicated Server

Dedicated servers are known for their high performing features in processing power and storage speed, connected to high-speed internet connections and hosted in data centers. Dedicated servers can be used for any number of things, some of which is the hosting of websites or database-intensive applications. A good example of this could be CRM systems such as Microsoft Dynamics or SAP. As the name implies, each server is dedicated privately to one client. The customer receives access to a physical server with the agreed upon hardware specifications, processing, and storage, all in one unit.

Main differences

It’s important to understand the differences between VPS and dedicated servers that are worth highlighting.

  • Security

Dedicated servers are generally said to be more secure than VPS. This is because in addition to all the usual threats that any hosting plan faces, VPS servers have a particular weakness that dedicated doesn’t: With a VPS there is always the chance that a neighbor on the server you share could become corrupted and affect your site.

  • Configuration

With VPS hosting, you are sharing the resources. With dedicated servers you get as much resource as you like and not having to rely on some else. You are the only user on the system, you have near total-control over everything and can therefore do pretty much whatever you want with it.

  • Performance

Performance is for big part related to the server’s hardware specifications. Given two servers with the same specifications, dedicated servers will always have a performance advantage over VPS servers. Simply said, with a dedicated server you do not need to share the resources between users.
